Richmond was founded in 1737 and incorporated in 1742. Richmond became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780. It houses the oldest elected legislative body in North America. Its nicknames are “RVA”, “River City”, and “Fist City”.
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, born Rebecca Davis in Delaware, (February 8, 1831 – March 9, 1895), was an American physician. As a graduate of New England Female Medical College in 1864, she became the first African American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States.
Crumpler first practiced medicine in Boston, primarily serving poor women and children. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, treating women and children. Later she worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau to provide medical care for freed slaves.
In 1900 the Census Bureau reported Richmond’s population as 62.1% White and 37.9% Black. Freed slaves and their descendants created a thriving African-American business community, and the city’s historic Jackson Ward became known as the “Wall Street of Black America”.
In 1903, African American businesswoman and financier Maggie L. Walker chartered St. Luke Penny Savings Bank and served as its first president. She was the first female bank president in the United States. Today the bank is called the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company and is the country’s oldest surviving African American bank.
John Creswell, U.S. Postmaster General, ended the policy of whites only mail carriers and appointed James Christian of Richmond, Virginia, the first black mail carrier in the United States, on June 1, 1869.
